Entomology Faculty Honored at Second Annual UM Celebration of Scholarship and Research

The University of Maryland Provost's Office and the Office of the Vice President for Research honored Maryland's outstanding scholars and researchers, particularly those recognized by their peers for their achievements during the past year, on Tuesday, April 28 at the Reckord Armory. The outstanding research accomplishments of four faculty members from the Department of Entomology were highlighted.

UM and Smithsonian Enter Into Agreement to Formally Pursue Research Collaborations

The University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institution have formally entered into an agreement to pursue broad research collaborations. The agreement allows and encourages, both institutions, its scholars, scientists and researchers to work together to increase contributions to science and knowledge, share their knowledge with the public, and engage in the development and education of future generations. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was formally signed by UM President C. D. Mote, Jr., and Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough at a ceremony on April 8, 2009. An accompanying memorandum between the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and the Graduate Program in Behavior, Ecology, Evolution and Systematics (BEES) at the University of Maryland was also signed to establish the Consortium for Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.

Dr. William Lamp Receives ESA Eastern Branch Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching

William LampDr. William Lamp, Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology, was awarded the Eastern Branch Entomological Society of America (ESA) Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching. Dr. Lamp has demonstrated excellent performance in teaching through his engaging instructional techniques, his contagious passion for insects, and his positive impact on high school, undergraduate, and graduate students through his instruction in the classroom and mentoring in the lab.

Dr. Maile Neel Granted Tenure and Promoted to Associate Professor

Dr. NeelThe prime objective of the research in Dr. Neel's lab is to understand patterns of biological diversity as well as the relationships between these patterns and the ecological and evolutionary processes that have created them. Dr. Neel is committed to applying this understanding to developing effective conservation approaches and to predict effects of changing patterns and processes.
