Entomology laboratories are housed on the third and fourth floor of the Plant Sciences Building on the University of Maryland, College Park campus.
Shared Equipment Facility
The Entomology Department maintains a shared equipment lab available to department faculty, students, and staff. This resource includes a PCR machine, nanodrop, microcentrifuge, speedvac, waterbath, freeze dryer and lyophilizer, Percival incubator, micropipette puller, gravity convection oven, and a Millipore water purification system. |
The Entomology Teaching Lab
The Entomology Department has a dedicated Teaching Lab in the Plant Sciences Building available for use by department faculty, students, and staff for courses, laboratories, extension, training, and/or community outreach. The lab is setup with a modern Crestron system capable to projecting multiple sources, including a teaching dissecting scope with a 1080p camera capable of both capturing and projecting data to the classroom. Individual dissecting scopes as well as a variety of collecting and field equipment is available for instructional use. |
Computing Resources
Entomology Department faculty, students, and staff have access to a shared in-house computing facility with multiple high-speed computers. These machines have large RAM capacities and are equipped with ArcGIS and SAS licenses and the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite. They are also connected to LaserJet printers and a variety of slide and flatbed scanners. Dedicated data analysis machines are also available for any work that needs to be run for multiple days or weeks. |
Dedicated IT Support
The Entomology Department has a full time IT staff member available to provide hardware, software, and general help-desk support to members of the department. Contact Greg Hess with any IT-related question. |
Other Equipment & Resources
Other equipment available to faculty and students include: -80C and -20C freezers, -20C walk-in freezer rooms, and 4C walk-in refrigerated rooms, autoclave, analytical balances, fume hoods, heat blocks, heated stir plates, shakers, vortex mixers, refrigerated centrifuges, electrophoresis and imaging systems, thermal cyclers, hybridization ovens, pipettors with various volume capabilities, certified Level II A2 biosafety laboratory, and pick-up trucks for field work. |
