Research Interests

The Economo Lab aims to understand the evolutionary diversification and ecological structure of biodiversity.  We seek to understand what generates and regulates biodiversity across levels of organization, while working to document the vast diversity of the planet. Our work integrates traditional field and collections-based approaches with emerging technologies in imaging, sequencing, and computation.  We particularly aim to address knowledge deficits for understudied taxa such as insects by generating and analyzing foundational big data resources.  Alongside our question-driven research program, we develop and adapt new technologies to both enhance our scientific work and create new ways for the public to interact with biodiversity.  Our research is strongly rooted in biodiversity collections, and the lab manages a research collection of approximately 50,000 ant specimens.
